Durkheim's theory, set out mainly in his Elementary Forms of Religious Life, seeks to describe the circumstances and processes which result in religion, defined in a way which has a more universal and a more modern appeal than Tylor's animism. Durkheim described it as an age in which the influence of the old gods of traditional religion was being replaced by new, more scientific ways of understanding the world.
