There are many ways to use a DAC: through a USB, S/PDIF, or Bluetooth connection—preferably aptX to get near CD-quality— or via Ethernet with a network player, or even through some less common connections. The new iFi Audio nano iOne DAC offers the first three possibilities, with an excellent sound quality and a great ease of use. An ESS DAC handles the data processing, calming those jitter nerves to run through custom Op Amps to emerge via single-ended outs or a 4.4mm balanced out on the rear of the chassis. Coax and optical are alternatives, if you flick the rear switch from analogue to digital, running to your favourite DAC. iFi does offer a Zen DAC but I’m going to look at that separately, in a different review.

Now the iFi device is a S/PDIF DAC whose inputs (nerds take note) are galvanically isolated. The Nano iONE is powered by any USB phone charger-type wall wart and a USB cable. Neither come supplied in the box. In my opinion, the render part of MQA is actually detrimental, and you'd be better off using a core decoder with a non-MQA DAC.
